Shodashvarga: the sixteen divisional charts

A map of the sixteen-chart vocabulary, from the D1 Rashi chart through the fine D60 division.

One longitude, different divisions

A varga begins with a sidereal longitude and partitions its 30° sign. Each chart uses a rule to assign the resulting part to a sign. The division number alone is not the complete mapping rule; sign type, starting point, and school conventions matter.

Smaller divisions magnify birth-time and ephemeris differences. D60 spans only half a degree per division. An uncertain time or approximate ayanamsa can therefore make a fine-division label unstable.

How to read this alongside a chart

Start with the D1 chart and its calculation settings. Do not transfer a D1 house number into a divisional chart without applying that chart’s own ascendant and assignment rule. Traditional topic associations vary by lineage and should be attributed, not treated as calculated outcomes.

Kalika’s chart calculator maps all sixteen named vargas from its D1 sidereal longitudes using a stated Parashari rule for each. D30 uses unequal traditional segments. Fine divisions, especially D60, are provisional near boundaries because the underlying ayanamsa is approximate.
