Kundli Milan and compatibility in Jyotisha
Understand Moon-based Ashtakoota Guna Milan, regional Porutham traditions, and the limits of a score.
The common North Indian Ashtakoota framework
A widely used Ashtakoota Guna Milan compares factors derived chiefly from each person’s Janma Rashi and Janma Nakshatra. Its eight kootas are Varna (1 point), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7), and Nadi (8), for a maximum of 36 points.
The point table is a classification scheme within a particular Jyotisha practice. Tables, exceptions, and the way a result is interpreted can differ by source and regional tradition. A total without its rule-by-rule breakdown hides those choices.
Ashtakoota and Porutham are not interchangeable labels
Some South Indian traditions use Porutham or Dasha Koota sets, with categories and decision rules that are not simply the same eight-factor, 36-point North Indian framework. A responsible comparison names the chosen method rather than blending favorable results from separate systems.
Janma Rashi is the Moon’s nirayana sign at birth. The Sun sign alone is not enough to reproduce a Moon-based matching method; precise chart inputs and a declared convention are needed, especially near a nakshatra boundary.
Read any score in context
Guna Milan is one traditional lens. It should not be used as a pass/fail decision, a guarantee of marital happiness, or a reason to pressure someone into or out of a relationship. A higher total does not establish lived compatibility, and a lower total is not proof that a relationship will fail.
Any broader reading would require both complete charts, further chart factors, a stated lineage, and a qualified practitioner’s judgment. Astrology cannot replace direct communication, freely given consent, personal boundaries, or practical support.
Share birth details with care
Birth date, time, and place are personal information. Ask the other person’s permission before entering or sharing their details. Do not post a chart or matching report publicly without consent.
If comparing chart facts for study, first calculate each person’s Janma Rashi and Janma Nakshatra from their own birth details, then check the method source and exceptions before interpreting the labels.
